Lib Dems Secure £6k Pot for Community Projects
The £2,000 per councillor per annum was cleared by the Green Party Cabinet on 29th July to come into effect almost immediately. The scheme will run for an initial year and then be reviewed with a view to continuing thereafter.
The idea was part of a budget amendment put forward earlier in the year by both the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats and voted through by Labour. Liberal Democrat leader on the City Council James Wright said:
Cllr James Wright
“It offers flexibility for councillors to respond to local community priorities and opportunities. The budgets can be pooled i.e. £6,000 for any whole ward, and hopefully it will encourage community participation and engagement including promoting volunteering. Do contact us with your ideas for the areas we already represent. Just as the county councillors are losing their members allowances, taken away by Reform, city councillors are being awarded their own. We hope to demonstrate the valuable role the award can play in promoting and strengthening communities, with the power of local decision-making being a long-standing Lib Dem belief.”
