Dodgy election leaflets: A statement

The Green party in Norwich are in hot water over use of council branding in election leaflet.

The Norwich Liberal Democrats have raised concerns about the design of a recent election leaflet distributed in the city, which they say closely resembles official communications from Norwich City Council.

While political parties routinely use creative approaches in their campaign literature, there are established expectations that election material should be clearly identifiable as coming from a political party. The Liberal Democrats say this leaflet appears to blur that line by closely mirroring the council’s branding, including colours, typography and the use of a ballot box logo typically associated with official election information, whilst at the same time lacking any Green Party branding.

Councillor James Wright, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Norwich City Council, said the issue was not about robust political debate, but about maintaining public confidence in the neutrality of local government and the election process.

"Local elections rely on trust. Residents should be able to look at a leaflet and immediately understand whether it is official information from the council or campaign material from a political party. When election literature closely imitates the branding of the authority running the election, it risks causing confusion and undermining that trust. This Green leaflet does that in spades.

This is particularly egregious due to the Green Party’s recent emphasis on supposed clean, honest politics. There can be little doubt that this piece of election literature is designed to hoodwink and deceive, banking on residents taking a glance at the branding and assuming it is from the council without thinking too much about it.
