An Update from Parliament: No to ID Cards & Securing Rights for Military Families
No to Digital ID Cards
Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to immediately cancel its plans for mandatory Digital ID.
Labour’s plan could require every resident to obtain a Digital ID to access public services and entitlements. This could risk criminalising millions of older people, people living in poverty and disabled people – who are more likely to be digitally excluded and could cost billions of pounds of taxpayers money with no clear benefit or safeguards.
Commenting on the opposition to digital ID cards, city councillor James Wright said:
“Local people want action on the issues that matter to them. We need action to fix our NHS and tackle the cost of living crises, not just gimmicks like this. The Government needs to scrap this plan and get on with making our country a better place to live. The Liberal Democrats oppose the Labour party’s long obsession with ID cars and more state control. We will fight tooth and nail – just as we successfully did against Tony Blair’s ID cards."
Lib Dems secure a big win for military families
The Government has finally given in to our longstanding campaign to improve the quality of military homes.
For far too long, the Ministry of Defence housing has not been subject to existing Decent Homes Standard legislation that has protected social housing tenants and is rightfully being expanded to all private homers in the Renters’ Rights Bill.
After relentless campaigning by the Liberal Democrat team in Parliament, the Government finally conceded and agreed a new amendment to the Renters’ Rights Bill, which will for the first time, require the Ministry of Defence to assess service family housing annually and report on whether it meets the Decent Homes Standard – creating a clear statutory mechanism for identifying and addressing shortcomings.
Gideon Amos, MP Housing and Communities Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats, said:

“Victories like this show why our voice matters and what the Liberal Democrats can achieve. It’s proof that if we keep fighting for what we believe in, we can improve lives for the better.”
