Chika Akinwale is the Lib Dem Candidate for Norwich North

31 May 2024

Norwich Lib Dems are pleased to unveil our candidate for the Norwich North constituency at the 2024 General Election, Chika Akinwale.

Chika has worked as:

- A project lead at I3 Parent hub, a community hub that supports parents and carers on their parenting journey.

- Director at Cambridge Leadership Academy, helping young people develop their self-confidence and employability skills.

- Parent-governor and chair of the curriculum committee.

She is now a district councillor in Ely, where she sits on the planning committee and is a substitute member to the licensing committee. Children and their wellbeing as long been a personal priority for her, and she has recently had success in securing accessible and inclusive playgrounds through her work as a councillor, which has been recognised in the press.

Chika's dayjob is as an author, and she is also studying LLM International Business Law at the University of Essex, when not looking after her three girls aged 11, 9, and 7.

Chika Believes Education is Key

Education is the key to the chance for a healthy and fulfilling life. The pandemic was a terrible reminder of the unfortunate gap in educational attainment between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers.

As parent-governor, Chika has understood the many struggles both schools and parents have to provide for our children, from poor housing conditions, to disrupted family relationships, to the inability to access quality early years education, and underfunding in classrooms.

Chika Believes Family is Important

Chika knows that children and young people need the right environment to thrive. It's therefore important to provide more support for families with a SENDCo need or disability, as well as those facing cost pressures. Parents and carers need to be given as much suppport as possible from time of pregnancy to a child's adulthood.

Chika Believes Mental Health is Crucial

Mental health is that important foundation for all of us, but unfortunately the government is only interested in performing quick fixes, with long term devastating consequences, not taking the due dilligence to properly observe the root cause of its issues.
